Dental crowns and restorative dentistry at Smile Avenue Family Dentistry

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

What Is Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over your entire tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Think of it as a protective helmet for a tooth that's been weakened by decay, a large filling, a crack, or a root canal.

Modern crowns are crafted from materials like porcelain, zirconia, and ceramic that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. At Smile Avenue, we design and fabricate many crowns in our on-site dental lab, which means faster turnaround and a more precise fit than crowns sent to outside laboratories.

Zirconia crowns are the strongest option available today — they resist chipping and cracking while still looking beautifully natural. Porcelain and ceramic crowns offer the most lifelike translucency for front teeth. Your dentist will recommend the best material based on the tooth's location and your bite.

With proper care, a high-quality dental crown can last 15 to 25 years or longer. They function just like natural teeth — you can eat, brush, and floss normally.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who Needs Dental Crowns?

You may benefit from dental crowns if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have a cracked or fractured tooth
  • A large cavity that's too big for a filling
  • You've had a root canal and the tooth needs protection
  • An old, large filling is breaking down
  • You want to improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth
  • You need to anchor a dental bridge
  • A dental implant needs a final restoration on top

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Dental Crowns Process

01

Exam & Treatment Planning

We examine the tooth, take digital X-rays or 3D scans, and discuss the best crown material for your situation. You'll receive a clear cost estimate.

02

Tooth Preparation

The tooth is gently reshaped to make room for the crown. We take precise digital impressions — no messy putty trays — and place a comfortable temporary crown.

03

Crown Fabrication

Your custom crown is crafted in our in-house dental lab using high-grade porcelain or zirconia, matched perfectly to your natural tooth color.

04

Final Placement

The temporary is removed, the permanent crown is checked for fit and bite, and then bonded securely in place. You leave with a fully restored tooth.
