UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

What Is Root Canal?

A root canal is a treatment that saves a tooth when the soft tissue inside it — called the pulp — becomes infected or inflamed. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels, which is why an infected tooth can cause intense pain. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent future infection.

Here's the truth that surprises most patients: modern root canals feel a lot like getting a regular filling. With today's anesthetics, rotary instruments, and advanced imaging, the procedure is faster and more comfortable than ever before. Most patients say the relief they feel afterward far outweighs any discomfort during treatment.

The alternative to a root canal is extracting the tooth entirely — which then requires an implant, bridge, or denture to replace it. A root canal lets you keep your natural tooth, which is almost always the healthier and more affordable option.

After root canal therapy, the tooth is typically protected with a dental crown to restore its full strength. With proper care, a root-canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who Needs Root Canal?

You may benefit from root canal if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have a severe, persistent toothache — especially pain that worsens with hot or cold
  • Your tooth is extremely sensitive to pressure or chewing
  • You notice swelling or a small bump (abscess) on your gums near a tooth
  • A tooth has become darkened or discolored
  • You've had trauma to a tooth (a hit, fall, or sports injury)
  • An X-ray shows infection at the tip of a tooth's root
  • A deep cavity has reached the nerve of the tooth

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Root Canal Process

01

Diagnosis & Imaging

We take detailed digital X-rays to confirm the infection, assess the tooth's root structure, and develop a precise treatment plan.

02

Numbing & Comfort Setup

The area is thoroughly numbed — you shouldn't feel any pain. Sedation options are available for nervous patients. A small shield (rubber dam) isolates the tooth.

03

Cleaning & Disinfection

A tiny opening is made in the top of the tooth. Using specialized rotary instruments, we carefully remove the infected pulp, clean the canals, and disinfect everything.

04

Sealing & Crown

The cleaned canals are filled and sealed with a biocompatible material. A temporary filling is placed, and you'll return for a custom crown to protect the tooth long-term.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

What Does Root Canal Cost?

Root canal costs depend on which tooth is involved — front teeth are simpler, while molars have more canals. At Smile Avenue, root canal therapy typically ranges from $800–$1,500 (not including the crown). Most PPO insurance plans cover root canals as a major procedure. We offer 0% financing and accept our membership plan for uninsured patients.

Root Canal FAQ

Modern root canals are performed under local anesthesia and are virtually painless — most patients compare the sensation to getting a filling. The toothache you're experiencing before the root canal is usually far worse than the procedure itself.

A typical root canal takes 60–90 minutes for a single appointment. Front teeth with one canal are faster (45–60 minutes). Molars with 3–4 canals may take up to 90 minutes. At Smile Avenue, most root canals are completed in a single visit.
