Dental Cleaning

The foundation of a healthy smile — professional cleanings that go far beyond what brushing and flossing can achieve.

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

What Is Dental Cleaning?

A professional dental cleaning (also called prophylaxis) is a preventive procedure performed by a dental hygienist to remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and surface stains from your teeth. Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque builds up in areas your toothbrush can't reach — between teeth, along the gumline, and behind back molars.

When plaque isn't removed, it hardens into tartar within 24-48 hours. Tartar can't be removed by brushing — only professional tools can safely remove it. Left untreated, tartar buildup leads to cavities, gingivitis (early gum disease), and eventually periodontitis (advanced gum disease that can cause tooth loss).

During a dental cleaning at Smile Avenue, your hygienist uses specialized instruments to gently remove all plaque and tartar, polishes your teeth to remove surface stains, and flosses to ensure no debris is left behind. Your dentist then performs a comprehensive exam to check for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and any other concerns.

We recommend professional cleanings every six months for most patients. Patients with gum disease or certain health conditions may benefit from more frequent cleanings — every three or four months. Regular cleanings are the single most effective way to prevent dental problems before they start.

  • You have persistent bad breath despite good oral hygiene

  • You're due for an oral cancer screening
  • You want to maintain the results of cosmetic dental work

Most people should visit the dentist every 6 months for a check-up and professional cleaning. If you have gum disease, diabetes, or a high cavity rate, your dentist may recommend visits every 3–4 months.

Dental anxiety is a general uneasiness about dental visits. Dental phobia (odontophobia) is an intense, irrational fear that may cause people to avoid the dentist entirely for years, even when in pain. Both are treatable.
