Sedation dentistry for comfortable care at Smile Avenue Family Dentistry

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental procedures. It's sometimes called 'sleep dentistry,' though you're typically awake — just deeply relaxed and calm. It's the perfect solution for anyone who feels anxious, nervous, or fearful about visiting the dentist.

At Smile Avenue, we offer three levels of sedation tailored to your comfort needs. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) provides mild relaxation that wears off within minutes. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before your appointment for moderate relaxation. IV sedation delivers medication directly into your bloodstream for deeper relaxation during more complex procedures.

Sedation dentistry isn't just for people with dental phobias. It's also ideal for patients who have a strong gag reflex, need extensive dental work completed in fewer visits, have difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia, or simply want a more comfortable experience.

Your safety is our top priority. Our team is trained in sedation protocols, and we monitor your vital signs throughout every procedure. You'll be in expert hands from the moment you arrive until you're ready to go home.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Who Needs Sedation Dentistry?

You may benefit from sedation dentistry if any of the following apply to you:

  • You experience dental anxiety or fear that prevents you from visiting the dentist
  • You have a strong gag reflex that makes dental work uncomfortable
  • You need multiple procedures and want them completed in fewer visits
  • You have difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia alone
  • You have a low pain threshold or heightened sensitivity
  • You had a traumatic dental experience in the past
  • You have special needs or conditions that make sitting still difficult

WHAT TO EXPECT

The Sedation Dentistry Process

01

Sedation Consultation

We review your medical history, discuss your anxiety triggers, and recommend the best sedation option for your needs and procedure.

02

Pre-Appointment Preparation

For oral or IV sedation, you'll receive specific instructions about eating, drinking, and medication. Nitrous oxide requires no prep.

03

Comfortable Treatment

Your sedation is administered, and we wait until you're fully relaxed before beginning. You'll feel calm and comfortable throughout.

04

Gentle Recovery

Nitrous oxide wears off in minutes. Oral and IV sedation patients rest briefly in our recovery area before being driven home by their companion.
