Tooth Extraction
Sometimes the best thing for your oral health is removing a damaged tooth — and with modern techniques, it's faster and more comfortable than you'd expect.

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS
What Is Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While we always try to save natural teeth first, there are situations where extraction is the best option for your overall oral health — such as severe decay, advanced infection, crowding, or impacted wisdom teeth.
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are fully visible above the gumline. The area is numbed, and the tooth is gently loosened and removed. Most simple extractions take just 20-30 minutes, and recovery is quick.
Surgical extractions are needed for teeth that are broken below the gumline or haven't fully erupted (like impacted wisdom teeth). A small incision is made in the gum tissue to access the tooth. At Smile Avenue, we perform surgical extractions in-house with sedation options so you stay comfortable throughout.
After extraction, we always discuss replacement options — dental implants, bridges, or dentures — to prevent the bone loss, shifting teeth, and bite changes that occur when a gap is left unfilled. For wisdom teeth, replacement isn't needed since those teeth don't serve a functional role.
IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Who Needs Tooth Extraction?
You may benefit from tooth extraction if any of the following apply to you:
- You have a severely decayed tooth that can't be saved with a filling, crown, or root canal
- A tooth is cracked or fractured below the gumline
- You have impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth causing pain or infection
- Advanced gum disease has loosened a tooth beyond repair
- You need teeth removed to make room for orthodontic treatment
- A baby tooth hasn't fallen out on its own and is blocking an adult tooth
- An infection or abscess isn't responding to antibiotics or root canal therapy
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Tooth Extraction Process
Exam & X-Rays
We evaluate the tooth and surrounding bone with digital X-rays or 3D imaging. We discuss whether the extraction is simple or surgical and review sedation options.
Anesthesia & Sedation
The area is completely numbed with local anesthesia. For anxious patients or surgical extractions, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation for full comfort.
Gentle Extraction
The tooth is carefully loosened and removed. For surgical cases, a small incision is made and the tooth may be sectioned for easier removal. Sutures are placed if needed.
Recovery & Replacement Planning
You'll receive detailed aftercare instructions and a prescription if needed. We schedule a follow-up and discuss tooth replacement options to protect your long-term oral health.
