What to Expect at a Sedation Dentistry Appointment

Before Your Appointment
Preparation depends on which type of sedation you’ll be receiving:
For Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
- Eat a light meal 2 hours before
- No special preparation needed
- You can drive yourself to and from the appointment
For Oral Sedation
- Fast for 6–8 hours before your appointment (water is usually okay)
- Take the prescribed sedative pill as directed (usually 30–60 minutes before)
- Arrange a ride — you cannot drive after oral sedation
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
- Leave jewelry and valuables at home
For IV Sedation
- Fast for 6–8 hours before your appointment
- Wear a short-sleeved shirt (for IV access)
- Arrange a ride — you cannot drive for 24 hours after IV sedation
- Have someone stay with you for the first few hours after your appointment
- Review all current medications with your doctor beforehand

The Sedation Process
- Nitrous oxide: A small mask is placed over your nose; you’ll feel relaxed within 2–3 minutes
- Oral sedation: The medication you took before arrival will already be taking effect; you’ll feel drowsy and calm
- IV sedation: A small IV line is placed (you may receive a topical numbing cream first); sedation begins almost immediately
What You’ll Feel
With all types of sedation, you’ll feel deeply relaxed and comfortable. Most patients describe it as a dream-like state — aware enough to respond to instructions but disconnected from anxiety and discomfort. Time seems to pass quickly; a 90-minute procedure may feel like 15 minutes.
After Your Appointment
Immediate Recovery

- A responsible adult must drive you home (oral and IV sedation)
- You may feel groggy, slightly disoriented, or emotional — this is completely normal
At Home
- Rest for the remainder of the day — no driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions
- Eat soft foods and drink plenty of water
- Take prescribed pain medication as directed if needed
- Sleep it off — many patients nap for a few hours and wake up feeling normal
The Next Day
- Most patients feel completely normal the next morning
- You can usually return to work and normal activities
- Follow any specific post-procedure instructions from your doctor
